“I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer.” This is how the Litany Against Fear as popularized by Frank Herbert’s Dune starts. It is absolutely right. However, fear can kill a lot more than the mind. How many opportunities were lost because of fear? How many creations remain unborn because of fear? How many bright futures remain in darkness because of fear? Fear is definitely a prolific killer. How does one overcome fear?

Fear can whisper many lies. When people listen, their resolve crumbles. However, the Bible has no shortage of encouragement when it comes to fear. The Lord repeatedly reminds us, “Do not be afraid.” Here are three lies and how you can cast them out with love.

Scarcity is one of the most believed lies in existence. It is also a lie that leads to many sins. When you feel limited in resources, you become gluttonous, envious, and greedy. When you feel limited in relationships, you become wrathful, prideful, and lustful. The lie of scarcity triggers fear and tempts us to mistrust the Father.

Remember that God created all things in abundance. There is plenty for everyone. Think of all the blessings. There are plenty of times you received provision even when you thought you were impoverished. He has not abandoned you and He never will.

You do not have to fight, steal, and claw at others to get what you need because God has already given you what you need. You are limitless because your Father in Heaven is limitless.

It is a terrible thing to be alone in a broken world. When you have no one to lean on, you can feel isolated wherever you go. When no one’s got your back, you can spend most of your waking moments looking over your shoulder.

You are never truly alone. Remember that you are a God container. You are a God vessel. You are a God bearer. The Almighty lives in you!

When you have no one to lean on, remember to lean on God. When you have no one to watch your back, know that God will always have your back. You are not alone.

There are a lot of voices in us. These are the voices of rage, passion, sorrow, boredom, and so on. Fear can be the loudest voice of all. When fear whispers, people listen. When it shouts, people panic.

Nothing inspires fear more than the thought that you are unwanted and unloved. It can send anyone on a downward spiral. However, there is a voice greater than fear. It is the voice of love. Let the voice of love echo in your heart. In fact, the sweetest voice of all is God’s voice. Listen to God’s voice.

God will tell you that cares for you. He celebrates you. You are definitely loved by God.

Fear is a very natural emotion. I too am afraid. I have a lot of fears. I am afraid of dogs, heights, enclosed spaces, rejection, failure, and a dozen more things. However, no matter how many reasons to be afraid there may be, there will always be one powerful reason to face those fears. That reason is love.

Make no mistake. Love does not lessen the fear but it heightens your courage instead. I learned this from experience. I am afraid of getting lost but I would go to missions because I love the people I needed to serve. I am afraid of speaking to a huge number of people but I am constantly facing that fear because I love the God I serve.

If a fearful person like me could face my fears then so could you. Face your fear but do not do so unarmed. Overcome fear with love.
