2021 is more than halfway done. Did you have your breakthrough yet? Breakthroughs are often a result of good habits that become good routines. With patience and perseverance, these routines will pave the way to your breakthroughs. So here’s the question. How do we stick to a new habit? So you have to learn HOW TO START NEW HABITS THAT STICK.
In the book Atomic Habits, James Clear offered laws or steps to building better habits. For me, the most important of those steps at least in starting and sticking with a new habit is to MAKE IT EASY. You see most people already know whats good for them. They know exercising and saving money are good habits but the act of starting those habits is difficult. If we don’t minimize the difficulty, sticking with these habits would be like climbing Mt. Everest every time. So, we have to find a way to make it easy.
EASY DOES NOT MEAN EFFORTLESS though. When you look for the easy way, you are using your intellect to come up with ways to simplify a task. When you look for the effortless way, you’re just being lazy. Any worthwhile goal will always require effort.
So we have to make an effort and the first step to making it easy is to DEFINE THE HABIT. What is the habit that you want to do? Pick a habit that you know will lead you to your breakthrough like reading the Bible? This is an awesome habit that will level up your spiritual life.
The next step is to BE MORE SPECIFIC. Meaning work out the details of your habits. For reading the Bible, you can aim for daily readings like the 1st and 2nd readings, psalms, and the Gospel of the day. I recommend getting yourself a Companion. It is a helpful book that has all the daily readings.
To make these habits stick, you have to come up with a back-up plan because there will be days when you can’t or don’t want to perform these habits. Perhaps you are not feeling well or your unmotivated because you had a fight with your boyfriend or your wife. You just want to quit. You want to surrender. Don’t quit! Don’t surrender! Do the back-up plan instead, which is to DO THE MINIMUM REQUIREMENT. In other words, find out the least that you can do in order to successfully do your habit. So, when you are struggling to read the Bible, you can just read the Gospel of the day, or just a chapter, or even a devotional like the Didache. It gives you daily snippets of the readings plus inspirational stories.
So in conclusion, you avoid surrendering on your habits by going minimal until you’re finally well enough to go back to your regular habit. Do these tricks to make your habits super easy and sticky. Pretty soon those habits are gonna be routines. Those routines will in turn pave the way to your breakthrough.
